Species list (grouped by taxonomic family)

The following list of 71 species consists of those that have been recorded in Britain and Ireland. This includes the 59 butterfly species that are regularly recorded each year comprising 56 resident species and 3 species (Clouded Yellow, Red Admiral and Painted Lady) that are regular migrants that also breed here. Others occur as rare migrants or vagrants and/or have become extinct having once been resident in the UK.

Two species (Geranium Bronze and Large Chequered Skipper) that are likely to have been accidentally introduced to the British Isles are excluded.

Of these 71 species, 69 have been recorded on UKBMS transects since 1976. Click on the species name for more information.
