Health & Safety Guidance

If taking part in recording butterflies as part of the UKBMS, it is essential that you follow our Health and Safety guidance

Risk Assessments

Butterfly Conservation has also produced standard Risk Assessment Forms which will assist you in considering and minimising any hazards that you may face out in the field:

Assemble Registration

Butterfly Conservation as the partner responsible for volunteers requires all UKBMS volunteers to register on its volunteer portal called Assemble. This applies to all volunteers that go out and survey a transect of WCBS square.

Please register by selecting the appropriate link for you are from either of the documents below:

Assemble registration for Transect Surveyors

Assemble registration for WCBS Recorders

Please note –

  • Assemble registration is a requirement for all UKBMS volunteers actively walking a transect or square (except for those involved in the National Trust Farmland Butterfly Survey and the Chilterns AONB Tracking The Impact project).
  • For those who are registering on the UKBMS website solely to enter or view data, Assemble registration is optional.
  • If you enter data on behalf of other volunteers who walk the transect, please pass this request on to them so that they can register on Assemble.

Coronavirus Guidance

It is our intention that the UKBMS will be operational throughout the 2022 season, and butterfly monitoring is permitted provided the following conditions are met at all times:

  • Recorders ensure they have permission to access the sites that they monitor.
  • Recorders adhere to any Covid-19 restrictions issued by the government for the area where they live.
  • Recorders take all sensible precautions to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
